Move To Cyprus.

After a minor nervous breakdown, having to give up work at 54, plus my wife's own illness and the everyday stress and strain of Life in England, we decided to make a very drastic change to our Lives. We had been holidaying in Cyprus for some 5 years and had fallen in love with the place from our first visit. Driving on the same side of the road, English being the second language, the climate, healthy lifestyle and the people, made it the place for us. So we planned to make it our retirement destination.

BUT, because of the Cyprus property boom, each annual visit announced ever-increasing property prices and we soon realised that our little villa was looking more like an apartment and even that could soon be unaffordable, if we didn't act soon. We both agreed, that rather than lose the dream, we had to bring our plans forward.

Fate gave us a helping hand. Parador Properties, a UK company that offer property trip to some 6 different countries, was doing a presentation at a local hotel, so we went along to take a closer look. We were completely sold on the idea and they arranged a 5 day property visit to Cyprus and it only cost us £49 in total.

So, we went back to Cyprus, with Parador Properties. They put us up at a 5 star hotel. We had breakfasts in the hotel, but lunches and dinners were all at local restaurants. We were wined and dined at Parador's expense for the whole of the 5 days. We were shown the local sites and amenities, the shops, the beaches and introduced to the idea of Off-Plan Purchase.

Basically, we agreed a budget for our property and we then spent the 5 days, viewing potential properties within that budget. The main downside of this idea is that because we were looking at completion in some 18 months time, most of the properties were only on plans. So, you only got to view a plot of land or maybe a partly-built shell. But you do get to see finished properties, as well,to give you a better idea. They also offer finished properties for immediate purchase. The upside of this type of buying is that once we had paid a deposit of CY£2000, the property was secured at that price and the balance was paid in staged payments over the next 18 months.

Well, we looked and we liked, but we went home without committing ourselves. We put our England home on the market, sold it within 2 months and returned to Cyprus to complete the deal, purchasing a 2 bedroom, first floor apartment, in Paralimni, on the East coast of Cyprus. Back in England, we moved in with relatives, for about 2 years, until our apartment was finished. The hard job then began, in selling the idea to our family. Although they probably thought we were being a bit selfish, in moving abroad, we had always put our kids first, but now they are all grown up, it was time to put ourselves first for once. And they soon realised that the cheap holidays abroad were quite a good bonus for them.
